Formula

risers = round(2 × rise + run ≈ 25) · comfort rule: 2 × riser + tread = 24–25 in

Example

108 in rise ÷ 14 risers = 7.71 in risers — inside the 7–7.75 in code band.

Code basics

Most residential codes cap risers at 7.75 in, require treads at least 10 in deep, limit variation between steps to 3/8 in, and mandate headroom above 6 ft 8 in. The calculator targets these bands.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my riser height not a whole number?

Even division of the total rise rarely lands on integers; codes care that all risers match each other, not that they're round.
