Formula

roof area = footprint × pitch multiplier (1.06 – 1.42); squares = area ÷ 100

Example

1,600 sq ft footprint at medium pitch (×1.19) ≈ 19 squares → about 57 bundles of three-bundle shingles.

Understanding squares and bundles

Roofing materials are sold by the 'square' (100 sq ft) and packaged in bundles — most shingles run three bundles per square. Steeper roofs multiply the footprint because the surface stretches diagonally.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my roof pitch?

Measure 12 inches along a level line against the roof, then measure vertical rise at that point — 5 inches means 5/12 pitch.
