Formula

posts = ceil(length ÷ spacing) + 1 · pickets = ceil(run ÷ (width + gap))

Example

100 ft at 8 ft spacing → 14 posts (incl. one end). At 72 in tall with 5.5" pickets + 0.5" gaps → ~217 pickets.

Planning notes

Corners and gates each need extra posts; add them manually. Check property lines and local height rules before digging — most codes require locating utilities first.
