Formula

increase % = ((new − original) ÷ |original|) × 100

Example

A price rises from $80 to $100. The change is $20, so the increase is 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.

Understanding percentage increase

Percentage increase compares a new value with the original and expresses the growth relative to where you started. A $20 rise means something very different on an $80 item than on an $800 item.

If the new value is smaller than the original, the result is negative — which is really a decrease. Use the percentage decrease calculator when you specifically want decreases shown as positive percentages.

Frequently asked questions

Why is percentage increase different from percentage decrease?

They use different bases. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase, but going back from 100 to 80 is only a 20% decrease, because the second calculation divides by 100.

Can percentage increase exceed 100%?

Yes. Doubling a value is a 100% increase; tripling it is a 200% increase.
