Formula

Uses continued fractions to find the best p/q approximation within your denominator limit.

Example

0.375 becomes 3/8 exactly. With a maximum denominator of 16, 0.6 still resolves cleanly to 3/5… capped at 16 it returns the closest fit.

Why results are approximations sometimes

Every terminating decimal maps exactly to a fraction. Repeating decimals like 0.333… are exact too, but the calculator must guess where your typed digits end — so it finds the simplest fraction consistent with what you entered.

Lower the maximum denominator when working with rulers and drill bits (try 32 or 64); raise it for precise engineering conversions.
