Formula

Iterates months: interest = balance × APR ÷ 12, balance = balance + interest − payment, until zero

Example

$5,000 at 21% APR with $200/month takes about 31 months and roughly $1,600 in interest.

Why minimum payments keep you in debt

Minimums are often 1–2% of balance plus interest, which can mean decades of repayment on a static balance. Raising the payment even modestly collapses both time and interest — try different amounts above.

Payment must exceed monthly interest

If your payment is smaller than one month's interest the balance grows forever; the calculator flags this instead of pretending progress exists.

Frequently asked questions

Should I consolidate or transfer the balance?

A 0% balance-transfer card or lower-rate consolidation loan can pause interest while you pay principal — just account for transfer fees and the promo period end date.

Does making two payments a month help?

Slightly — average daily balance drops sooner, trimming interest. The bigger win is simply paying more overall.
